Can Going to the Dentist Increase Your Child’s Self Esteem?

Bring Child to PediatricianThere is an old adage that says “healthy mouth, healthy you.” While many people recognize that good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist help keep your teeth and mouth healthy and strong, not as many stop to think about the surprising health and psychological benefits that come from taking care of your teeth. For parents who want to do everything they can to boost their child’s self-confidence and self-esteem, one of the easiest things that you can do is take them to the dentist regularly.

Our society is built upon our relationships with other people. From our families, to our schools, to our places of work, most of us are in common contact with other people at various times throughout the day. Much of our confidence and self-esteem, especially early in life, comes from our ability to have positive interactions with the people around us.

One great way to help your child feel confident and comfortable around other people is to help them have good oral hygiene. When children don’t take proper care of their teeth, it can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and tooth decay. While none of these problems are fun to deal with physically, they all have potential social effects as well. Tooth decay and gingivitis can lead to bad breath, and even to rotting teeth and gums. When a child leaves the house knowing that his mouth is full of unseemly sights and smells, it can lower his self-confidence. It can also, unfortunately, leave him open to ridicule and teasing from the kids around him.

On the flip side, when a child takes care of his teeth, there are many positive ramifications. A pleasant smelling mouth full of pearly whites helps a child feel confident when he talks with his friends, teachers, and any other people involved in his day. It also helps prevent the child from being distracted by aching teeth or gums.

It is not just children who need the self-esteem boost that comes from a healthy mouth. To help ensure that all members of your family (including you) have the confidence to face the world with pretty, healthy teeth, help everyone follow good oral hygiene practices at home. Encourage brushing and flossing regularly and take everyone to the dentist for regular check-ups.
